Reverence is my reaction to awe. I see the full moon hanging amidst the stars, a quiet wind whsipering over the land beneath; redwoods piercing the fog as they reach ever upwards; or one person laying themselves beautifully open to another and my breath catches. I stop, amazed. I stare with my whole self. And before all that majesty, I find myself thinking, “How can I repay the gift of this moment?”
The Universe is connected: each action and emotion reverberating along the delicate web that connects us to each other. Like a tuning fork when the perfect ptich is hit, I sing the song of all that is when awe awakens in me. But then I lean over and attempt to gently tap something- the rim of a wineglass, maybe- to spread that sense of amazement on.
Reverence is the joyous acknowledgment of all that is grand in the world. It is the quiet stillness that follows in the wake of something spectacular. It is our soul’s gift back to the Universe. By the act of our reverence, we pour ourselves out, as the Universe has poured itself out for us.
We are alight with the fire that lit the stars.
